’27 King Street’ is situated in the popular Angus holiday village of Ferryden which stands on a natural harbour known as
Montrose basin, famous as a bird sanctuary and containing a visitor centre.
The sanctuary is best seen at high tide, especially in autumn when migrant geese call there.
The well-designed visitor centre has an exhibition and telescopes overlooking the estuary and is enjoyable for children.
Those who wish to abandon their cars will find many good and varied walks in the immediate and surrounding area.
The proprietors have bicycles which are available for hire.
Nearby are places of historic interest such as Glamis Castle, where Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, now the Queen Mother, was
born, Fasque House near Fettercairn, where one time Prime Minister Gladstone lived, and Kirriemuir, birthplace of J.M
Barrie, author of Peter Pan.
The seaside town of Arbroath is 14 miles south, while Carnoustie, famed for its golf tournament, is a further 8 miles distant.
Golf is also available in Montrose.
Ferryden is approximately 30 miles from Dundee where the road bridge across the Firth of Tay gives access to the entire
Kingdom of Fife with its many quaint harbour villages that invite exploration.
Dundee itself is home to the Royal Research Ship Discovery, which was used by Captain Scott on his last fatal expedition
to the South Pole, and has become the centrepiece of Discovery Point, a visitor centre telling the heroic story of polar
exploration.
The vessel was built in 1901 using local expertise in the construction of whaling vessels capable of withstanding the
Antarctic ice.
Exhibits and special effects recreate the voyages of the Discovery, and visitors can also board the ship.
Also berthed here is the frigate HMS Unicorn, the oldest British warship still afloat, built in Chatham, England, in 1824.
The "Fair City of Perth" makes a very enjoyable day's outing - the round trip being around 100 miles.
Here the visitor will find a wide assortment of interesting shops to browse around, as well as a wide choice of restaurants
and eating facilities.
